While it’s had mixed reviews, there’s no doubt that The Great Wall is a visual feast. You’d expect nothing less from Yimou Zhang, the director of Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Curse of The Golden Flower.

His films are perfect material for 4K releases and stylish steelbook packaging. Which is lucky, because that’s exactly what The Great Wall is getting, with this upcoming UK release, which includes 4K & Blu-ray discs.

Pre-orders will be live around midday on Wednesday February 22nd, so ignore the ‘sold out’ button before then..

We’ve been told there will be just 500 copies of this available.

Pre-order: Zavvi

Starring global superstar Matt Damon and directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers). The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure as European mercenaries searching for black powder become embroiled in the defense of the Great Wall of China against a horde of monstrous creatures.

  1. Very interesting to see that the 3D disc has been dropped in favor of a 4K disc. The movie has a 3D version at select cinemas so is definitely available. I wonder if this is the way all future big movie releases will be going?

    • Well given that there are no 3D TVs being made by the big manufacturers this year, I think 3D is finally on the way out.

    • Yea I was waiting to see when 3D Blurays would stop being made but I thought it would depend on whether the 3D format stopped being shown in cinemas and as this movie has a 3D release I’m surprised they didn’t include it and do 4K separate. I would still think that more people at home still have 3D capabilities than 4K.

    • I guess there will still be 3D at the cinema for a while, but, assuming no more 3D come next yes either, I’d expect 3D Blu-ray to phase out over the next 2-3 years

The focus now is on 4K, and 3D isn’t part of the 4K spec

Shame the film is so bad, otherwise a nice looking release. Was expecting to see 4K take over 3D discs in Steelbooks soon.
